What is it?
The National Junior Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character.
History
Five main purposes have guided chapters of NJHS from the beginning: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; to encourage responsible citizenship; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter.
What is the qualification process at SRMS?
In the spring, students who fulfill both the Scholarship and Citizenship prerequisites will receive a letter stating they have met these two requirements. The letter also includes information regarding the next step in the qualifying process as well as important upcoming dates. Meeting both the Scholarship and Citizenship requirements does not guarantee membership in the Shadow Ridge MS NJHS. However, these two standards must be met prior to receiving the informational letter and moving on to the next step. Scholarship standards must be met prior to Citizenship standards.
The requirements are:
1 Scholarship- To fulfill the scholarship requirement, students must have a cumulative scholastic average of 92.0 after the 1st Semester of 7th grade. This average is based on core classes only and is calculated by the district. Pre AP, LEAP, and Algebra/High School Credit classes are weighted accordingly in the district report.
2 Citizenship- To fulfill the citizenship requirement, students must receive recommendation by the faculty. Students must receive an average of 40 points out of 50 from each teacher.
**The Leadership, Character, and Service requirements will be provided to those that move on to the next step in the qualifying process.**
