Ms. Michelle Hopper, RN BSN
Hello Dolphin Families! My name is Nurse Hopper. It’s good to be back and see all the familiar faces (and the ones that are new!).
I graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, worked for many years in various hospitals and now really enjoy being your school nurse! I have lived in Flower Mound since joining Lewisville ISD, originally from St. Louis, Missouri but have lived in Mississippi, California, and New York states; Texas is my favorite! I have one daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren that attend LISD. We feel fortunate for the exceptional education they are getting through LISD.
My job as the school nurse is to help Donald STEM Academy Elementary School be a healthy, safe place to learn. Absences are treated like any other illness, and you can contact the attendance clerk for any questions. Remember, you can always update your child’s health information on Skyward and feel free to access the side tab titles to the left for more information and forms you might need. If you have any further questions, concerns or need to talk with me about your student, please feel free to call or email me anytime.
SHOULD MY CHILD GO TO SCHOOL IF…
Being at school is your child’s “job”. It is where a lot of learning happens! Some parents may wonder when they should keep their child at home due to illness. LISD guidelines are as follows...
-Any fever >100.0 with or without flu-like symptoms (sore throat, cough, body aches)
-Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
-Red, crusty, draining eyes.
-Uncontrolled coughing.
-Contagious conditions (untreated lice, sores like ringworm or impetigo that cannot be covered, unexplained rash and other conditions specified by the Texas State Dept of Health)
-Open, draining lesions
-A student that is too ill to participate in learning activities.
A student must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication (like Tylenol or Motrin) before returning to school. If your student is put on antibiotics for an infection, please keep them home for 24 hours after starting medication.
Believe it or not, some students just want to stay home when they are not sick. Please make school a priority for them. Every day at Donald Stem Academy is a learning day! Monitoring bedtime and a well-organized morning can make it easier to get them in the right frame of mind.
Don’t forget to send a note when they return to school!
WHEW, IT'S HOT!!
Yep-it’s still hot! Pack those water bottles every day, no matter the weather. Our kids still go outside for recess because they need to get those wiggles out. But since we’re in Texas, and it can be REALLY hot, we do have guidelines to follow. We go by the heat index (not just the temperature) and here’s the breakdown…
Heat index 104+ inside recess for all
Heat index 99–103 limits outside activity to 20 minutes-lots of water!!
Heat index 90-98 Monitors conditions for 30 minutes, lots of water before, during and after.
Heat index 89 outside for all! Water, breaks and shade as needed.
Wind chill under 34 inside recess for all-we dream of this day!
